For the first time in over ten years, Capcom and Marvel are teaming up to bring to gamers the next generation version of the powerhouse mash-up Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The game is scheduled for release on February 15th of this year, and is perhaps one of the biggest sequels in the history of the series.
Not much has been leaked about story, boss characters, modes, etc., but most gamers are expecting the game to be hyped up until the midnight release. Many gamers are anxious to see just what will unfold for this series, and which characters will be playable. This particular mash-up series is all about exploding the character roster to epic numbers. This title in the series boasts about thirty characters all around, but could very well be over fifty by the end.
The game play is simple: a three-on-three two-dimensional fighter with tag-ins is the basis for the game. Unlike your traditional fighting game, MvC is supposed to be about using specific characters together to make the best team in any given scenario, making it one of the tougher fighting games around. If the third installment is anything like the first two, it will require the player to use strategy before and during fights. Again, characters is what drives this series, along with excellent game play, physics, and stages. Hidden characters, and unruly boss fights have also driven this series to be what it is, and that’s a unique fighting experience, which allows for players to mesh-up hardcore gamers with casual, as pro fighting genre players can go head-to-head with button-mashers.
The list of characters so far has been quite astounding, as I mentioned above, there is a possibility for at least thirty characters to duke it out. Some confirmed are:
Capcom:
Ryu (Street Fighter IV)
Chun-Li (Street Fighter IV)
Zero (Mega-Man X)
Arthur of Ghost n’ Goblins fame
Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker from Resident Evil
Dante (Devil May Cry)
And many more
Marvel:
Captain America
Iron Man
Wolverine
Hulk and She-Hulk
X-23 (Wolverine-like girl from the X-Men Last Stand movie)
Magneto
And still much more
I do hope that more characters are confirmed, particularly a few that maybe overlooked:
Capcom characters I would like to see
Mega-Man
Vega (Street Fighter IV)
Akuma (Street Fighter IV, possibly confirmed)
Jill Valentine (Resident Evil 1 and 3 fame, though the games are dated, perhaps she’ll be on the roster?)
Toko Bots (Always loved them in the second game, although they are spam friendly)
Marvel Characters I would like to see in the game:
Before I list, I do want to explain that although these games both seem like they are linked to either street Fighter or X-Men respectively, there are other characters from both universes that do indeed deserve to be in the game, for the marvel side I have:
Black Heart (An original character from the first few games, that should be returned once again, joined by his rival, Ghost Rider.)
Ghost Rider ( A character always overlooked, but worthy of the game, and perhaps even an awesome asset to the roster.)
Shamor Goroth (Another classic character that few people know the origins of, but also a great asset to the game.)
Venom (Yet another character that would be returning to the game, but still very much a fan favorite in the Spider-Man mythos)
(My personal favorite) Carnage (This would be a first time for the symbiotic lunatic, but would be an awesome character, though in truth, a Venom clone.)
Lastly, I’d like to see the Punisher put into the game, it would counter out the likes of Chris Redfield and those particular characters that are gun-based. Frank Castle may very well not be in this game, but for hopeful future titles, he would be an excellent shoe-in for most unlikely character, but still worthy of being considered part of the Marvel family, even if he is the Black Sheep.
Then again, Punisher may also raise the ESRB rating to Mature, but with the popularity of the Punisher movie, and the War Journal comics, this game may very well see a possible future of Frank Castle being included.
Surely we can’t speculate what could be, rather than what is with this game, but some other characters that are confirmed are: Haggard, Nightcrawler, Deadpool, and possibly Nemesis (Why I think Valentine will make a cameo appearance.)
The game is a typical fighter, each combatant will have their own specialized moves, power-ups, combos, etc. The game will consist of three-on-three rounds, as mentioned above. This means that all the characters can interact and use their attacks together. This allows for most giant combos to consist of using all three characters together, even combining all three finishing moves together.
With an elemental fluidity that comes from combining excellent game play with artistic graphics, the series has been a contender with other games in the genre, and this is combined with detail to both universes respectfully, it is a fan fiction fantasy that can only be written for Marvel and Capcom.
More details will be coming only as the release of the game is coming up shortly, Here at the Malacast Editorial, we will have the review of the game. As always, thank you for reading the Malacast Editorial. For more information, follow the Malacast Editorial on Twitter @mcasteditorial.
