Editorial- Are Movie Awards Rewards?
I always thought that movies needed to be entertaining in order to achieve some kind of accolade. Apparently with the Oscars being so horrid, the majority of the films few have seen, how come the content of these films are any more important than say...Man of Steel?
I did not watch the Oscars, and I am not going to trick you into thinking this editorial is about the Oscars, but my point still stands: why are movies like Frozen, Man of Steel, and most likely next year, The Lego Movie, snubbed, and why do we give movies like Gravity such applause? Especially when I know most of us haven't seen it?
I love film, and I love most genres, especially original scripts. I know historically, movies are based on best selling novels, and in today's world: best selling graphic novels.
Movies like a Pacific Rim will never win an Academy Award, because they are not what represents the Hollywood axiom. They involve guns, violence and special effects (which in comparison to movies I grew up watching are child's play, ie, Cannibal Holocaust) they are films that are seen more as seat fillers, but not sophisticated (essentially drawl, boring liberal campus pleasing) films.
Movies that make the left look like heroes, with yellow journalism sicken me to a degree that I love it when a big budge film is successful, and has no ties to the nonsense of either the left or the right. Movies like The Avengers, or more recently, Iron Man 3, that although we're controversial more because of fan base, I love that they are fun, not full of some bias that half your audience will find insulting. Nobody cares about your politics, everyone has a political view, and most of the time their side is wrong, and they are the worst individual to represent its basic principles.
Winning an Oscar is like winning an award for being rich, handsome, and famous. It is an ass kissing spiel the goes on for three hours too long, and consists of people who are only important to themselves. Most of us can remember when actors were recognizable, individuals that brought diversity to the red carpet. Alas, those days are done and replaced with carbon copies of each other.
This has been going on for decades, because we now think this 1% group are greater than the rest, because they can memorize words of a script, and essentially be paid millions to play an adult game of house.
I doubt the majority feel the same way, seeing as they tune in extravagant numbers. Sure, I know I'm more upset because the movies I enjoy (that is, the thousands released a year that are usually better than the top contenders never get recognition, let-alone theatrical release) never are up for an Academy Award. The same reason goes for not watching the Grammys, or only tuning into the Tonys because Neil Patrick Harris is actually worth my time.
So yeah, u think award shows are a waste of time, and the people who actually win awards should be humbled, but not that false "OMG... I cannot believe I won this award with such worthy nominees." But actual humility, because awards are blowhard events that mask the real issues, and that is that entertainment (primarily Old Media) is racking up more and more asinine performers each year that are more eye candy than entertaining. Hollywood big budget films will always outdo the Woody Allen films, and the liberal bias obscenities that come up with some ultra liberal "hero" like the Matt Damons and the Ben Afflecks, or even the George Clooneys of the world that we fail to remember why they are so famous today. None of them are Gary Cooper, or Humphrey Bogart, or even Lauren Bacall and Kim Novak. We have a whole generation of actors who are nothing glamorous, nothing outstanding, they make it seem as if the standards are so low that I could act. Now that may be more the fault of the director, and even more-so the script writer, but I place blame all around.
To end on a positive note, I have to say I love film, I think it's a great art form, and a strong science to learn if you take the old route of working with actual tape. I love the work that goes into editing, and I respect those who do a very important but historically thankless job.
In conclusion, I believe that the movies we love most are The ones least likely to get the accredited accolades, and, but they earn millions, sometimes billions, so is that enough? Apparently we don't measure the success by money made at the box office, because the. Every award would still be given to The Avengers, which is still the highest box office smash still today.
