Short post for today: so as you know the marketing geniuses over at Konami have basically killed their franchise in Silent Hill via getting everyone's hopes up, and crashing them within six months prior to the most strategic move in recent video game history of revealing a new title: P.T. And of course not to be outdone, pulled P.T. from the Playstation store, where it will be vanquished to the black hole of vapors are of which all great new, challenging ideas go to become Youtube fodder until the next console cycle.
Still, I was surely looking forward to a new silent Hill game next year, and I'm sure many other dedicated fans were looking forward to it as well. I was very much looking to see how the story could've progressed, as the story in much of this franchise is never lacking in both jest, and enrapturing the player to the point they must play through immediately after the final credits roll. Silent Hill was always one of the best, and perhaps most respected franchises in gaming history,me socially for being so noir, and so niche, but with an AAA publisher backing it every step, until recently, when the last several games have been a hardening for a desire to see this franchise be released for the clutches of Jo ami's talons, and set free on the game d elopement world to become a beautiful, original songbird once again ushering in the local fan we to something both creator and gamer can be proud of, not the rushed trash of yesterday.
Even the teaser video for Silent Hills was refreshing, and looked to be equally as unnerving as it's small DLC counterpart in P.T. Sure, Konami may have given up on making full/length console titles, so why not sell off this franchise, which you obviously neglect like the prodigal red headed stepchild, and give it to someone thwt would like to make a profit, mso you can try and fiddle with MEtak Gear Solid, post Mojima, and ruin that franchise for those diehard fans. You can fail, Konami, and you will have only yourselves to blame. Granted, Konami does hold more stock in other products, and major game development fo r consoles wouldn't even put a dent in their company if they decided to stop overnight, but let's look at it this way: how many would stop supporting Konami if felt left behind by a trusted company that has developed and published so many franchises that people love so much? Castlevania fans are rabid, perhaps evn more rabid than even the most diehard MGS, or Silent Hill fan, and they've been shafted so often, I shutter to think of the resentment they must hold. Although I'm not necessarily upset with the loss of Guilmero Del Toro, nor even the hotly sought after Norman Reedus, I do care a great deal of the fanbase it would've brought in, and I would been happy if the game was mediocre at bet, so long as it was not a complete piss on the fans as Homecoming was, nor the better, albeit, still shitty Downpour.
Perhaps Konami didn't get the memo, but I do believe one thing is for certain: I do want to see this game series killed off, because sometimes it's better to enjoy fond shattered memories, rather than have it rehashed to the point of being some hipster's sick, twisted idea of an ironic joke. Either way, I'll still support this series until the swansong is uttered, and the franchise goes to the depths, an ugly duckling of it's creator's forbidden experiments, suffocating it under it's own depravity of a once former, glorious self. Whatever the sentiment Konami has for this series, they should know people do listen, and react, and if they want to kill off their game development arm to focus on more profitable areas, I as a capitalist couldn't hold it against them, but as games are art, and exceptions to many rules we'd give to other venues for creativity, I do believe the profits would be there, so long as they stayed true to their vision, and didn't take their fanbase for granted.
So thank you for killing my enthusiasm for next year, Konami. I'm sure you too will be working on Metal Gear Solid VI, and thus bringing an end to a franchise that is growing as stale as Final Fantasy, but hey! At least we can finally see how well Konami does without those fans licking their jowls in anticipation. Although after MGS IV, immsure they've grown tired of gaming without the actual game, and I'm sure they'll be all-the-more excited to see this franchise go to pasture, and a new IP be mishandled like so many great ones before.
