2009 is looking to be an up year in the entertainment world, despite economic crushing from the market. Although many would say that the economy will not see a fixing in some time, I'd like to be a bit more optimistic and hope that the youth of our world will prevail to overcome the obstacles the older farts have given us to bare. What does this have to do with technology and entertainment? Far more than most realize: see, our generation (18-24) well add a few years and subtract a few to get a better estimate, but the point is we are the first generation to ever witness such a technological boom, and a recession all at once. Our 401Ks will be vanquished before they're even existing. Granted, iPods are being created, and we're buying them up like reserved water, but our houses have no income to sustain an electrical charge so we can watch Scrubs season 1 on iPod Touch.
Our vast wealth of knowledge on every gizmo in existence, now with the creation of "E-Cigarettes" technology do we see our cultural shifts towards technological progression, while the economic recession teeters on world bankruptcy. Perhaps the problem is not that we cannot fix the economy, but that the economy is unfixable due to the fact it's the same "economy" since 1942. The way business is done is perhaps the oldest form of our economy. Capitalism is an amazing form of government, but without a reformation towards a changing world, it will falter just like the Neanderthals.
This post is not primarily on how the economy we as a human race are all a part of is doing, but on how despite it's downturn there are plenty of desperate cries for help in the entertainment business with an uproar of upcoming films and video games. DVD sales are suppose to even spike in the upcoming months, and that includes an increase as well in Blu-Ray sales, but those statistics you receive via spam mail are about as accurate as shitting from the sky and hitting a three-legged ant.
Image from http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2008/10/23/hotel-for-dogs-poster.jpg Will this movie sell out as expected when released on DVD/Blu-Ray April 28th, 2009? Time will tell for sure, but we'll be guaranteed to see the sales figures after Tuesday.
Movies coming to DVD and Blu-Ray are always bested by the hardware one sees the movie more valuable on, such as a movie on Blu-Ray may very well exceed sales of the same movie on DVD due to the picture quality enhancing the film. Transformers is such a film where I can assure the Blu-Ray Sales per capita make up an astounding amount over the regular DVD sales. One film I see being a big seller in disc format is Hotel for Dogs, a film about a group of kids that build a hotel completely dedicated to stray dogs so they have a sanctuary to stay. I'm sure uproarious laughs and loving scenes occur often in this film, as I've yet to truly view it for myself, but my point is to be made in due time. It seems these child-aimed films do more than just make parents lay down twenty plus dollars at a movie, they also create a shit-load of revenue that one would find extraordinary. This is proof further that children are not only a key demographic for Hollywood, but Hollywood may very well not survive without the child market. Even the PG-13 movie The Dark Knight was still targeting an audience below that age range, even down to the ages of four and five! Surely anyone who's been to a movie theater during a PG-13 movie can attest that although the rating claims to be for teenagers, children are very well spotted out in the seats as well, so do not take that rating system as not a target demographic for children.

This year has seen so far a number of great video games that have come out for the consumer market in hopes of sparking a bit of cash in the pockets of these developing companies. Capcom released its prime jewel, Resident Evil 5, selling a whopping 1,523,000 copies on both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 combined. This shows that even in a down makert, numbers will be larger, but will the numbers quarterly be the same? Time will tell if a spruce in the market will raise sales higher, despite having monthly records of all-time lows, it seems teens are still edging on to buy the latest games and films.
Even as recent as today, we can see that sales for the prior week are not even moving upwards, as money has seemed to somehow ceased. For a Saturday even, the amount of money spent shopping has by chance lowered more and more as the months have gone by, but with the releases of new movies, new technology, and with the hopes of an uprising economy, time will tell the factor of the entrainment business's future, and the likelihood of sales improving.
