I have not participated in an MK tournament since 4, not hsve been a top player since MKII, as I set a record-setting victory count on one arcade machine after then release of the game in 1994. Still, my gut says this would be the best time to jump back into the fray, because Mortal Kombat X is a whole new ball game. I don't care if the configurations are the same as they were since the dawn of MK I, this game is a revitalization of the series, and those lucky enough to have plsyed the open beta know that the learning curve on this game is astronomical, as are the algorithms, being that each character has at the very most three variants. I've sat by and watched people play this game on streams, and it is not Mortal Kombat rehashed in a shiny new box, it is very, very different. To the tournament gamer, this game is going to take at least a week of nonstop playing, just to get the basics. A game of this magnitude, and testing it out against so many different anomalies means most people going into this game are not going to have a clue what to expect from their opponent, because there is no way (unless sign-up for the tournament is at least a month out from release) anyone is going to be fully prepared to play at the levels shown for past tournaments.
Mortal Kombat 9 had a fluid, almost artistic flow to it when it came to pulling off certain counters, even adding in the ability of a Toasty! boost to the game. Still, tourney favorites like Kitana are now practically multiple characters stuck in one, as she now possesses a great deal of Jade's (my personal favorite in 9) moves, will her learning curve hinder most veteran players now, because the two styles are very different.
The same could be said for Kung Lao, and the returning Liu Kang, which will have distinctly different styles, albeit many returning moves that may just keep most people from jumping right min with the older characters, and seeking out play with the newer editions to the game.
Personally, I've seen a great deal of potential from Ferra/Tor, but I think the character out of box that is going to be the most impact, and getting the least talk is Koto Khan. Raiden of course looks astronomically better for tournament play than in recent depictions of the character, and could easily become a fan favorite.
I was brash to turn down my invitation, as I can't dislodge any inside info, I'd like to say that as a player who has bided his time for years, and has always had a far more unique play style than his constituents, I may just partake in this tournament, although I was saving up to play in SF V, that ship is docked at port for quite a while, maybe it'll be time to have some fun, or at least be a spectator,,because this whole Fatal Eight fiasco has gotten the MK world excited, and I think MK fans love a good challenge.
The more I think about it,the more information I would like to see leaked, because tournaments are competitive, but for the gaming community to come together and play such a storied title, one tht is perhaps most dear to my heart, would be exciting. Now of course, everything is speculation, but what isn't speculation is the Friday the 13th Round Robin Fighting tournament to be held in November
I'll be hosting a tournament locally in November. I host the Friday the 13th Round Robin fighting Tournaments, and whatever the newer game to be released at the time of Friday the 13th will be what's played.
